Editorial Standards

Last updated: October 2026

Legal News Report publishes practical explanations of the laws that affect everyday decisions about money, housing, work, and consumer disputes. These standards describe how we choose, research, write, and update what we publish.

Our purpose

We aim to help readers understand their situation and their options. We publish general information, not legal advice. We do not represent readers, and reading our content does not create an attorney-client relationship.

How we choose topics

We focus on questions readers are actively trying to answer: a deposit deduction they disagree with, a final paycheck that hasn’t arrived, a settlement notice they’re unsure about, or a business that closed with their money. We prioritize topics where clear, accurate information can help someone take a sensible next step.

How we research

  • Primary sources first. Wherever possible, we rely on statutes, regulations, court records, official settlement websites, and guidance from government agencies.
  • Attribution. When we rely on reporting by another publication, we say so and link to it.
  • Jurisdiction. Laws vary by state and change over time. We state which jurisdiction an article covers, or explain where rules commonly differ.
  • Verification. We do not publish a settlement deadline, claim link, or payment status unless we have confirmed it with an official source.

How we write

  • We explain legal concepts in plain language and define terms when we use them.
  • We separate verified facts from allegations. A lawsuit is not a finding of wrongdoing, and a settlement is not an admission of liability unless the record says so.
  • We describe options and limitations honestly and avoid overstating what a reader can expect.
  • We do not use fear, false urgency, or exaggerated claims to drive clicks.

Updates and corrections

We review published articles when the law or the facts change, and we show a meaningful “updated” date only when we make a substantive change. When we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and transparently. Our Corrections Policy explains how.

Independence and commercial relationships

Editorial decisions are made independently of advertisers and partners. Sponsored content, if we publish it, is clearly labeled. Paid or affiliate links are disclosed and marked so search engines can identify them. We do not accept payment in exchange for favorable coverage.

Authors and review

Every article lists who wrote it. We only describe an article as reviewed by an attorney or other expert when a named reviewer has actually reviewed it.
